I had the beautiful experience of being transported through time by scent—guided by April Henson, BLHF Program Manager and founder of House of Henscents.
Walking into April’s Aromatherapy Lab felt like stepping into a sanctuary. The air was filled with the calming aromas of eucalyptus, lavender, and the sweet, delicate notes of rose petals. Her workshop was alive with handcrafted candles, nourishing body oils, whipped butters, and an array of fragrances—each created to evoke memory, emotion, and connection.
During our conversation, April shared a deeply personal story: her workshop is set in the same space where her late father once worked as a welder. He also inspired the founding of the Boris L. Henson Foundation. This profound connection is a reminder of how scent can anchor us to the people and places we love. Through fragrance, memory comes alive.
I watched April bring that idea to life as she demonstrated her creative process. One of her most meaningful scents, 1948, was inspired by her father. Every note in the fragrance carries a piece of his memory—transforming scent into both a tool for healing and a form of storytelling.
For anyone who longs to reconnect with memory, heritage, or simply create something that reflects your essence, April’s workshop is a space for you. Join her this October at the Can We Talk?: Arts & Wellness Summit.
