The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in 2018 by Taraji P. Henson. The foundation is named in honor of Ms. Henson’s father, Boris Lawrence Henson, who suffered from mental health challenges as a result of his tour of duty in the Vietnam War without resources or support. Our vision is to eradicate the stigma and the silence surrounding mental health issues in the Black community.  Statistically, African Americans are the least likely population to seek treatment and therapy. There is a general lack of trust in sharing vulnerability due to fear of being misdiagnosed, labeled for life, or appearing  inadequate or weak. We are committed to changing this perception by encouraging those who suffer from this debilitating illness to get the help they need. One of our guiding pillars at the foundation is to increase the number of culturally competent Black therapists by offering scholarships to students interested in pursuing a career in mental health fields.
